To read or not to read?
When a child isn’t able to read at grade level, it affects everyone. Homework time turns into tears and frustration for the student, parentsĀ become the homework ‘police’ or you end up practically doing the assignment for your child just to end the misery. Been there, done that? Many of us have.
Sometimes you have to ask yourself, “What’s the goal here?” Is the goal to get your child to actually read the words on the page or is it for your child to obtain the new information? Obtaining new information is basically the whole purpose for reading, isn’t it?
Programs that translate the written word into the spoken word are a great tool for the student who finds reading difficult. With an inexpensive scanner, like this CanonColor Image Scanner
, textbooks, worksheets and tests can be scanned as .Pdf files and read back using a program like TextAloud
.
Text Aloud will read your child’s schoolwork as well as read back anything typed into the program. Some of the program’s features include:
- Proofreading your own writing .
- Saving text to MP3 for portable audio players. Listen to that report while you’re on the treadmill.
- Finding help for someone with a reading disability. Help a senior citizen or someone with low vision.
- Listening to an eBook during your commute.
- Reducing eye strain from too much reading. Find a great new tool to study for exams.
